Calderstones Mansion House in Calderstones Park, Liverpool, is a ‘restrained neo-classical’ ashlar mansion that was built in 1828 for Joseph Need Walker, a lead shot manufacturer. It has a long history, having been acquired by Charles MacIver, co-founder of Cunard Line, in 1875, and then bequeathed to the Liverpool Corporation in 1902. It has hosted a tea room, cafe and events venue, but in the 1970s became council offices and remained that way until 2012. It was subsequently acquired by The Reader, and in 2017 they began redevelopment work to restore the grade II listed Mansion House and create The Reader’s International Centre for Shared Reading, the world’s first public building dedicated to literature and wellbeing.
