Utilita Arena Birmingham is an indoor arena and sporting venue in central Birmingham. As regular hosts of UK Athletics Indoor Championships, the venue has had a running track since it was built in 1991.
Neon Arena Services build the running track at Utilita Arena Birmingham, the main arena in Birmingham City Centre, every February (ready for the UK Athletics Indoor Championships), and it’s one of their biggest jobs!
Historically, up until 2019, Neon Arena Services built this track under the direction and control of NEC Arenas Technical, as a local arena delivery partner. However, in 2019, they were awarded the building of the track as a main contractor, directly for Birmingham City Council.
Then in 2021, the city council decided to purchase a new track to replace the original, which had been in use since 1991. Neon Services were approached by Dynamik Sports, the supplier of the 200-metre new Mondo running track, to continue working as the main contractor, but also to take delivery of it and be responsible for storing, and maintaining it.
Neon took delivery of this brand-new £1.7m track in November 2022 and built it for the first time in February 2023, and Regenology were asked to film the project to show the very first build!
It’s been fantastic to work with Neon and amazing to see how the track comes together in such a short amount of time!
Our film was shared by Birmingham City Council and was used in local news reports and articles by British Athletics about the new track – and we are proud to share it with you here:
