Lichfield Southern Bypass Phase 4: Installation of Railway Bridge Deck

Staffordshire County Council, working with Amey, have installed a new railway bridge as part of the Lichfield Southern Bypass Scheme. Over a 5 day period, the ground was prepared, the bridge deck was manoeuvred into place and fixed into position, and trains began to travel over the bridge for the first time. The bridge was completed during a 105-hour Christmas possession, and the track was handed back to Network Rail with no incidents and 5.5 hours early. We were there to capture all of the installation action!

The Lichfield Southern Bypass was designed to reduced congestion in the city centre, improve traffic flow and allow for the construction of new homes. The project took many years to complete, continued at pace and safely through the pandemic period, and the bypass was finally officially opened at the end of 2021.
